Dr. Daniel Atwine, MD, MPH(M), MPhil, PhD, is the Executive Director and Research Director at SRF-RTCs and Soar Research Foundation. He is a Ugandan medical doctor, epidemiologist, and public health leader with over 18 years in clinical research and 16 years in postgraduate mentorship. He holds an MBChB (MUST, 2007), MPH (Brussels, 2010), MPhil (Stellenbosch, 2016), and PhD in Epidemiology (Montpellier, 2017), complemented by postgraduate diplomas and international training in epidemiology, TB control, systematic reviews, mentorship, and research ethics, equipping him with extensive expertise in public health research and capacity building. He has guided 450+ research projects and led impactful studies in TB, malaria, HIV, maternal health, diagnostics, and biomedical innovation. He is a research Trainer and has implemented over 7 Clinical Trials in Low resource settings. He also conducts project evaluations and impact assessments and program monitoring and evaluations. He chairs the African Biomedical Engineering Consortium (ABEC), the Global South Trials Network (GLISTEN), Humanitarian Action and Research for Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) and Refugees in Uganda (HARI-Uganda) consortium, and co-chairs Uganda’s National TB Research Committee. With 75+ publications including books, global presentations, and multiple awards, he champions ethical, equitable and inclusive African-led health research to improve vulnerable communities’ wellbeing and generate solutions for the neglected communicable and non-communicable diseases in Africa. He is passionate about adapting health interventions and innovations to the context of refugees and Internal displaced persons (IDPs).
Dr. Sunday Nighty Atwine, MD, MPH is the Director of Operations at SRF-RTCs and Soar Research Foundation. She is a medical doctor and public health specialist with over 16 years of experience in HIV, sexual and reproductive health, maternal and child health, and health system strengthening. She holds an MPH and MBChB from MUST, a Diploma in Clinical Trials from the University of Montpellier and MUST, and certification in Project Management from APMG International. Her research has focused on HIV and adolescent health, particularly risky sexual behaviours and preventive strategies. She has also pioneered integrated HIV and NCD health services. She is a member of the Executive steering committee of the Global South Trials Network (GLISTEN).
Ms. Caroline Birungi, is the Senior Research Regulatory Manager and Training coordinator at SRF-RTC with 9 years of professional experience. She holds a BSc in Education from MUST and is pursuing an MPH in Research Ethics. She has additional training in clinical trials, ethics, regulatory practice, GCP, science-to-policy communication, and project impact evaluation from institutions including NIH, UNCST, African Bioethics Network and the University of Montpellier. A qualitative researcher, Ms. Birungi coordinates several studies, including the IDRC-funded CONNECT project on caregiver-adolescent SRH communication in Uganda
Dr. Elizabeth Kemigisha, MD, MMED-Ped, PhD is our SRF Organization Ambassador/Co-Director, CRT (Resource mobilization).
In this Honorary Position, She serves as the official face and voice of SRF-RTC in external engagements, acting as a bridge between the organization and its stakeholders. The role is to promote SRF-RTC’s mission, advocate for locally driven evidence-based solutions, foster partnerships, mobilize resources, and inspire the next generation of researchers. She is a paediatrician, epidemiologist, and a postdoctoral research scientist at the African Population and Health Research Center in Nairobi, Kenya. She holds a PhD in Social and Health Sciences from Ghent University, Belgium, and has 16 years of experience in clinical trials, epidemiological surveys, and multidisciplinary research. Her work spans infectious and non-communicable disease epidemiology, adolescent and child health, health systems strengthening, and program evaluation. Dr. Kemigisha has coordinated several notable trials, including studies on sexuality education, cerebral malaria, adolescent maternal health, and HIV prevention interventions.
Ms. Akatukwasa Cecilia, MPH, PhD is a Consultant Qualitative Research Scientist at SRF-RTC with over 18 years of experience in public health research. She holds a PhD in Health Sciences (Ghent University), an MPH (MUST), a Postgraduate Diploma in Education, and a BSc in Biology and Psychology (MUK). She is an expert in sexual and reproductive health (SRH) research, with extensive work on caregiver-adolescent SRH communication. Ms. Akatukwasa has also received advanced training in clinical micro-research, research administration, monitoring and evaluation, grant writing, and Good Clinical Practice.
Dr. Kaziga Ruth, PhD is a Research Associate and Sexual and Reproductive Health (SRH) Expert at SRF-RTC with 11 years of professional experience. She holds a PhD in Development Studies and an MA in Governance and Planning from MUST, a BA in Development Studies, and an Advanced Diploma in SRHR from Lund University, Sweden. Dr. Ruth is a skilled qualitative researcher with extensive experience in adolescent SRH. She has undertaken advanced training in scientific writing, research ethics, participatory community development, and Good Clinical Practice, and has contributed to multiple global health initiatives.
Ms. Elizabeth Ninsiima, MPH track is a Research and Community engagement Officer at SRF-RTC with 12 years of professional experience, primarily as a data manager within HIV programs and as a research assistant. She is experienced in translation and transcription of qualitative data. She holds a Bachelor of Environmental Science from Makerere University and is pursuing a Master of Public Health at Bishop Stuart University, Mbarara. Ms. Ninsiima has additional training in Good Clinical Practice (NIDA Clinical Trials Network) and Research Ethics (Global Health Network). She brings expertise in data management, research coordination, and supporting HIV-related program implementation
Ms. Ikiriza Teta Joanna, is a Data Manager and Systems Coordinator at SRF-RTC. She holds a Bachelor of Science (Hons) in Software Engineering from the African Leadership University, Rwanda, and an Advanced Diploma in Professional Computing and Information Technology (ABMA-UK under MTAC). She is currently pursuing a Diploma in Data Science and has additional training in Good Clinical Practice (NIDA Clinical Trials Network). Ms. Ikiriza specializes in data management, computing, and applied informatics to support clinical research and public health programs.
